We soccerized it, and we took it to a completely different level. The Tar Heels' record under Dorrance stood at 809-67-36 (.887 winning percentage) over 33 seasons at the end of the 2017 season. All of Us Can Be Excellent. Or if you have a collection of small societies with the six people youre leading and your restaurant group its cookie cutter where yeah, we all do this. Anson: Because one of the hardest things to construct in a young woman, and actually women in generaland Im sure Im preaching to the choir hereis confidence. One is that I am going to improve by trying to beat everyone to death and every single minute of every single practice, but also the other kids will benefit from that because in order to deal with me, they have to raise their competitive level as well. So we took every one of our principles and we attached a motivational quote that every kid in our program had to memorize. Its my laboratory of the human spirit for leadership development, which is the most failed leadership platform in the world, because Ive never developed a frigging leader out of it. I want them to basically be wonderful leaders, and the principles of our core values, or what we try to drive everyone in the program to live. This wasnt good enough. So anyway, we got her to shut up and we made a nice run. Anson: But basically I try to get them out of my system. Melissa: So do you incorporate your core values back into your recruiting process? Ive had so many train wreck failures in leadership I dont know, I could write a book on failing to develop leaders. Melissa: Yeah, thats definitely, I mean, I think recruiting and hiring really good culture fits is a, it is a hard, hard thing. And they brought Brodsky in and Brodsky sat down all of his PhD candidates and masters candidates in Russian literature and assigned them all of this Russian literature and poetry to memorize. And sure enough, if all of your listeners would buy and read that book, theyre going to get a sense of what their moral imperative is. And he said, well, if thats the case none of you guys will get your PhDs and masters degrees. They guide the players from season to season, practice to practice, minute to minute. I said, theres another level in you. He has won 22 National Championships and is the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport.
